This spot from Lays features Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head enjoying their addictive salty snacks. Do I really need to say any more for you to get the picture? No, right? It’s a cute concept that got mucked up by someone overthinking it.
From the moment Mr. Potato Head walks into his home and hears someone crunching on chips, the viewer-at-large knows what’s coming. And that’s ok, we’ll wait for it, because it’s fun. However, this commercial loses its greatness when he finds his spud spouse crunching away and says, “But you’re a potato.” No kidding. She’s Mrs. Potato Head. We all get it, and the over-clarification is a little insulting, IMHO.
It’s a shame. This could have been a really great ad. If only they hadn’t said potato…
