Marsala. The color of 2015?

As they do every year, the color specialists at Pantone have announced the color for 2015. And the color of the year is…Marsala. They say this rich reddish brown will define the mood of consumers in the coming year.

While I do like food and wine, I’m not sure how I feel about this color for design. Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, says, “Marsala enriches our mind, body and soul, exuding confidence and stability. Much like the fortified wine that gives Marsala its name, this tasteful hue embodies the satisfying richness of a fulfilling meal, while its grounding red-brown roots emanate a sophisticated, natural earthiness. This hearty, yet stylish tone is universally appealing and translates easily to fashion, beauty, industrial design, home furnishings and interiors.”

Maybe it will grow on me, but I’m not sure if I can get behind this color choice. It just makes me think of the rust that was on my parents station wagon back in the early 80s, not exactly what I want to see on my scarves, pillows or coffee pots – but that’s just me. I’ll be interested to see if this color really is the new black or just inspires people to eat more chicken and drink more wine.
