Walgreens Commercial Puts the “Ew” in Flu

I’ve got to hand it to the Walgreens ad creative team. This is the second time in less than a year that I’m writing a post about their commercials. Last winter, I was impressed with their octogenarian twins – and the personality they were bringing to Walgreens. Now on the tail end of September summer, the drug store has brought it again: with “At the Corner of Icing and Icky.”

In this spot, a cherubic little girl is baking with her out-of-central-casting grandmother. Naturally this Rockwellian scene includes a dog. When Grandma turns her back, this little angel engages in some unhygienic kid behavior – from sticking her finger in the bowl to having the dog lick the spoon. Of course, unsuspecting Nanna then takes the spoon out of the bowl and gives it a good lick herself (just after Rover did the same). Seems that the secret ingredient in this family’s baking is germ sharing. Luckily, you can get a flu shot at Walgreens.

Bam. The story sucks you in – it’s cute, funny, gross, and real. I’m sold by the fact that Walgreens is injecting more than saliva into batter…they are continuing to put personality into their ads and separating themselves from the competition. It’s working for me.
