Food Porn Throughout The Ages

Warning: This Post Features Disturbing Images

Before Instagram… Before Flickr… Before camera phones… Heck, before there were cameras or phones, there was still food porn. Your Facebook stream is probably being populated right this second by photos of your friends’ most recent meals, from gourmet creations to fast food shots.  In fact, “food porn” is one of the most commonly shared images in social media. Why? People are proud of their home-cooked creations and delectable discoveries and they want the world to know about it. And thanks to social media, now that dream can come true. So what did people do before we were all so connected? A recent trip to the Louvre answered that question for me… Here’s some food porn by the masters.

van Ruysdael painted some fetching fowl:

Beyeren fished for compliments for the chef:

Weenix hopped up some future Haasenpfeffer:

Even the great Rembrandt dipped his brush in some culinary cow-ness:

While these images may not be as attractive as the iPhone pictures we see on our screens, old world food porn took a lot more effort (and talent) to share.
