Holidays Gone Wild

Erase any thoughts of lewd infomercials – this social media campaign by the Turtle Back Zoo in West Orange, NJ leverages their furry, feathery, finny and scaly residents to bring messages of good cheer (and requests for support). Every day of December, the Zoo’s Facebook fans have been treated to a clever new graphic, like this:

Amidst the fun, however, there has also been some important messaging – such as bringing food, clothing and toys for the needy to the Zoo’s free holiday lights spectacular. Fundraising efforts include reminders that fans can “adopt an animal” at the zoo to help offset costs for feeding and care. There’s even mention of the animal wish list, whereby people can donate items the Zoo needs to show their support.

Graphical memes like this are becoming more and more popular with the more visual social media networks – and they take time to do correctly, in terms of properly representing the brand and encouraging virality via likes, comments and shares. The Turtle Back Zoo has basically created a campaign of 31 ads here – no slight undertaking, but one that can be quite effective as shown by their uptick in fan growth and overall page engagement. When it comes to social media marketing, it seems Turtle Back Zoo got everything they wanted this holiday season. We hope you did, too.
